By Joël Pommerat (Paris)

Joël Pommerat is one of the greatest French theatre artists. Infused with exceptional sensibility and rare intelligence, his creations astonish spectators of all ages, daring them to dream. His liberal reimagining of children’s literature classic Pinocchio reinstates the darker feel of the original 1883 novel by Carlo Collodi.

Barely out of the tree trunk from which he was sculpted, wooden puppet Pinocchio is already infuriatingly obnoxious. Attracting trouble wherever he goes, he is rapidly thrown into a myriad of adventures and perilous ordeals through which he slowly starts to morph. Thanks to the guidance and kindness of the blue fairy, the patience and unconditional love of his father, and to his own personal efforts and lessons learned, Pinocchio eventually becomes the real boy he dreamt of being.

By juxtaposing the naive imaginary of children with the harshness of “grownups”, Pinocchio plays with the contrasts between the austerity of reality and the artifices of phantasmagoria. Dark but luminous, magical but moral, funny but disturbing, the show embraces the cruelest aspects of human nature as well as its tenderest.

In this bewildering production, everything is ingeniously coherent. Masks, shadows, veils, lighting and poetic effects create an almost cinematic dimension of magical melancholy, once more demonstrating the prodigious genius of Pommerat.
