The Hamartia Trilogy is composed of three short solo pieces performed by author Jaha Koo, a South Korean multidisciplinary artist based in Belgium. The word hamartia derives from Greek tragedy and refers to a hero’s flaw or defect that leads to their downfall. The shows form one single whole but can be enjoyed independently in no chronological order.

The exceptionally inventive theatre of the trilogy is inspired by documentaries, history and autobiography. These three gems sparkle with humour and poetry, combining technological precision, tender words, a sharp yet compassionate social critique and a profound humanity.

Lolling and Rolling deals with tongues in both meanings of the word. Tongue‑tie surgery is a common phenomenon in South Korea, in which people cut their lingual frenulum to improve English pronunciation and allow them to distinguish pronunciation of the tip‑of‑the‑tongue R from the letter “L.” Based on his own experience learning English, Jaha Koo acts as a VJ to manipulate archival video footage as a reflection on Western, and particularly American, cultural imperialism, as well as its Japanese and South Korean counterparts, which share a similar desire to erase national differences and silence minorities and the lower classes.
