La brute qui pleure et La vierge folle (Québec)

All public, from 14 years old

A contemporary Quebec adaptation of Shakespeare’s Hamlet, L’heure bleue embraces the tropes of horror and fantasy and sidelines the political framework of the original work to focus on the human aspects of the plot.

It is a unique theatrical experience that takes place outdoors in the woods at dusk. This setting reinforces the raw, somewhat wild, somewhat strange side of the play; the vegetation creates an eerie atmosphere and gives a distinctive texture to the performers’ movements and voices, as well as the music and lighting. Careful you don’t get the shivers.

In this piece, the character of Hamlet with his famous line “to be or not to be” is transported forward in time. Here he becomes Junior, a modern young man torn between the choice to be or not to be, to do or not to do. Since the death of his father, Junior has not been the same. A little paranoid, sometimes violent, he isolates himself and pulls away from his mother, who is already seeing another man: his uncle… One evening, in the forest, Junior and his friends discover his father’s hunting rifle, far from where his body was found. Is it a sign? A message? A sick joke?

Junior is confronted with doubt, his inability to take action and his fear of the dire consequences his actions may bring. He must choose whether to accept the world around him or reject it: choose between adult and child, between reason and madness, between day and night. But the uncertainty paralyzes him…

L’heure bleue was created by David Bouchard and Maxime Robin and is produced by their respective companies, La brute qui pleure and La vierge folle, both based in Québec City. This play is presented in an outdoor space equipped with bleachers. Dress warm!
