Carrefour wanted to invite as many people as possible to its tenth festival. And this is where the theatrical ramble imagined by Frédéric Dubois and his creative team comes in. A voyage of discovery through the streets revealing Quebec City in its nocturnal guise, exposing its secrets, its dreams, its stranger aspects. A popular event put on for free that offers an unusual meeting ground for theatre, artists and the public in the streets of Saint Roch.
Où tu vas quand tu dors en marchant…? is a nocturnal voyage interrupted by stops for performances that combine the spectacular with the intimate, from Parc Lucien-Borne to Église Saint-Roch. Où tu vas quand tu dors en marchant…? is six sites, six creators, six spheres of artistic activity, over 150 artists, technicians and extras. Où tu vas quand tu dors en marchant…? is a multiple-choice performance where festival goers, both as spectators and participants, can visit the sites in the order they choose and at their own pace.
With a leitmotif of secrets, inspired by those revealed to us by the public during the weeks preceding the event, the voyage begins in the poetic atmosphere of a summer night as imagined by actress Véronique Côté. It continues with the surprising apparitions of visual artist Claudie Gagnon, the noise machines of soundscape artist Pascal Robitaille, the very peculiar guided tour imagined by director Frédéric Dubois and the blue universe invented by scenographer Sébastien Dionne on Saint-Joseph street. An immense popular ball organized by choreographer Harold Rhéaume in front of Église Saint-Roch is the concluding act.
Frédéric Dubois is an extremely talented director. His audacity and maturity astound me. He is also a very close friend. Fred and I have spent many hours walking, talking, dreaming. White nights and dark secrets, the city at night, secret paths, the night's secrets, things you never do in the daytime, things you only say at night, everything that is allowed at night… Fred surrounded himself with people of extraordinary creativity to invent this itinerary. Let our night see the day!
Carrefour is the renewed possibility of bringing the world to our doorstep, in an instant, in all its variety. It is a unique opportunity during the year for members of the theatre world to meet, share and reveal themselves. Coming back here is to be once more in the middle of all that. Pure joy!

Où tu vas quand tu dors en marchant…?
Parcours théâtral dans les rues de Saint-Roch
"You must have something that you keep hidden. Turn it into art!" This is the invitation extended to the public by Véronique Côté, the creator of Jardins secrets. The actress, whose brilliant performances have been seen in productions by Wajdi Mouawad and in works she has directed such as Une année sans été (2004) and Show d’vaches au Bitch Club Paradise (2005-2008), has imagined a universe filled with poetry and dreams for this first stop on our theatrical journey. In Parc Lucien-Borne white beds have been installed where, to the sound of lullabies, actors whisper in our ears tales inspired by secrets the public has revealed.
From the world of secrets, we pass into that of Apparitions in Parc Notre-Dame-de-Grâce, one of Quebec City's best kept mysteries. In the heart of the forest, living tableaus with night-based themes appear suddenly and come to life before melting back into the shadows. It is multidisciplinary artist Claudie Gagnon, whose works have been presented around the world, who brings the park to life. She is featured this year in the C'est arrivé près de chez vous contemporary art exhibition at the Musée national des Beaux-Arts.
A designer of sound, Pascal Robitaille has participated in countless creations and received numerous awards and nominations for his work on productions such as Zazie dans le métro (2002), Mammouth et Maggie (2002), Téléroman (2004) and Santiago (2007). It is in the company of his sound machines that we stroll the median strip of Boulevard Langelier. In the universe of Dormance mécanique, playful constructions, recreating a concert of frogs or stupefying snores, lead us into the fabulous imaginary world found in sleep.
Frédéric Dubois, grand maestro of Parcours, has imagined a guided bus tour entitled Avancez en arrière. He invites us to travel the streets of Saint-Roch and discover the most bizarre aspects of the night in strange tableaus, in unusual places. Frédéric Dubois has been the artistic director of the Théâtre des Fonds de Tiroirs since its creation in 1997. Notable productions include his adaptation of Zazie dans le métro by Raymond Queneau in 2001 and the magnificent outdoor staging of Vie et mort du roi boiteux by Jean-Pierre Ronfard. Recently, he directed the musical drama Les Misérables based on the novel by Victor Hugo.
Rue Saint-Joseph is our next stop with Noctambleu, a creation of scenographer Sébastien Dionne. Store windows, cars, the entire street, all evoke a huge variety of secrets and confessions. Painting, sculpture, installations and performances combine to create an unusual and baroque work. A promising young scenographer, Sébastien Dionne recently worked on the costumes for the musical comedy Annie at the Salle Dina-Bélanger and for Cabaret Dynamite at Espace 400e. His scenography for La Trilogie de Belgrade presented at Premier Acte last year earned him a nomination at the 22nd annual Arts and Culture Awards.
Our final destination is the Église Saint-Roch for a huge outdoor ball prepared by Harold Rhéaume. Music, dancers and actors invite spectators to take part in La Noce. We can expect pure delight, knowing the talent of the founder of Fils d’Adrien danse, a company that has breathed new life into contemporary dance in Quebec City. For his creation, Le fil de l’Histoire, which had people dancing in the streets during Quebec City's 400th anniversary celebrations, Harold Rhéaume was awarded the Prix du développement culturel at the Gala d’excellence des arts et de la culture de Québec in 2008.
